Mathematics Learning Resource Center Home Page

The Mathematics Learning Resource Center was established on the OSU campus in 1985 to serve undergraduate mathematics students. It serves today as a comprehensive help center that strives to meet all the extra-classroom needs of undergraduate students, and it has a number of features that make it unique.

Services Offered by the MLRC

Tutoring for lower division courses (Beginning College Algebra thru Diff Eq/Linear Algebra).
Grading for most lower division courses.
On-demand help at the computers.
Calculator and software short-courses.
Special help sessions such as examination reviews.
Services for faculty workshops.
Site visits.

Facilities of the Center

A 35 station microcomputer laboratory offering Derive, Mathematica, Maple, spreadsheets, word processors, graphing software, tutorial software, internet connections, and lots more. The microcomputers are connected via a Novell network to the Mathematics Department and to the OSU campus network. Original hardware was provided by a grant from Texas Instruments, Inc. and later replaced by a grant from AT&T; and by direct Departmental expenditures.

A 25 station computer classroom is connected to the MLRC file server. The classroom is booked each day from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with classes from pre-calculus, calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and advanced mathematics courses. The hardware and software for the classroom was provided through a National Science Foundation ILI grant with matching funds provided by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. The Department of Mathematics provided renovation costs. This facility will be available in the evenings during fall semesters for student and faculty use. To reserve this space contact the front office at 744-5688

A 12 station video laboratory with an accompanying library of over 300 videotapes covering the range from elementary algebra through linear algebra and differential equations. These are available for on-site viewing or for overnight check-out.

There are very large rooms and ample space for tutoring of the lower math classes. This space includes large desks for the convenience of the students and plenty of chalkboard space for working example problems.

Three fixed and six portable classroom demonstration units consisting of laptops and computer projection panels. This equipment was provided by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

The MLRC Staff

The MLRC is under the direction of Catherine Costanza, Administrative Director, and Dr. Birne Binegar, Faculty Director. The day to day operations are maintained by our undergraduate coordinators. They have a large say in what services are offered and how they are implemented. They operate their own training and development programs and enlist help from graduate students and faculty. Our experience is that students respond favorably to help from their peers, and it is a model that we highly recommend to others. The staff is large, and many OSU mathematics majors graduate with considerable experience using technology in undergraduate education.

Our systems administrator, Raven Tompkins (raven@math.okstate.edu), is in charge of day to day maintenance of math department computers and she is available every day. She also has a home page which you are welcome to peruse.

Pay us a visit. The MLRC maintains an active visitation program for students and faculty. We can arrange tours for high school and college faculty and their classes. You can email Catherine Costanza(cat@mail.math.okstate.edu) to arrange such a visit. For college faculty there are limited funds available to pay expenses. We hope to extend this service to high school faculty in the near future.
