A Model Laboratory and Regional Technology Assistance Center

This project with Principal Investigators Bruce Crauder, Benny Evans and Alan Noell was funded by the National Science Foundation in 1994. Funding continues through the summer of 1995, but we hope to continue many of the serivces of the Center beyond the funding period for the grant. One of the goals of the project is to establish a central location where regional mathematics educators can look for educational materials, help, advice, and moral support.

This Mathematics Education Internet Source which we hope to improve and expand. Your comments or suggestions are earnestly solicited.
We maintain an extensive mailing list to help keep communication active. If you would like to added to the list email us. (Please include you name, address, phone number, email address, and institutional affiliation)
Workshops designed to help mathematics educators deal with the influence of technology in mathematics instruction.
- Two five-day, hands-on workshops were held on the OSU campus in August of 1994. Approximately 30 mathematics educators attended each. Larry Husch from the University of Tennessee was a featured speaker. Topics included calculators and computers in elementary mathematics and an introduction to the internet.
- In the Spring of 1995 a one day informational discourse was held on the OSU campus to provide participants with a general overview of the interplay between technology and mathematics education. 55 participants attended.
- In the Summer of 1995, three intensive three-day workshops were held. Approximately 30 mathematics educators attended each. The first workshop hosted by Alan Noell was directed at the use of calculators in undergraduate mathematics. Instruction was provided for the TI-82 and 85. Dennis Bertholf was a guest speaker for the workshop. He reported on progress at OSU on the use of graphing calculators in college algebra.
  The second and third workshops hosted by Benny Evans dealt respectively with computer algebra and the internet. The computer algebra workshop focused primarily on Derive, but guest speakers, Brian Conrey and Ed Dunne, introduced participants to Mathematica and Maple as well. One of the activities of the participants was to work through A Derive Primer for Pre Calculus, Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. This brief workbook provides an introduction to Derive and gives a number of examples and problems that are appropriate for classroom demonstrations or laboratory exercises. It is intended to be used with the books Linear Algebra with Derive and Discovering Calculus with Derive, second edition (both published by John Wiley & Sons) by Evans and Johnson, but it is also useful as a stand-alone book.   The participants in the Internet Workshop learned the basics of HTML code and produced their own home pages! Most gave us permission to include them here.
- We have tentatively scheduled workshops for the spring of 1996 and hope to offer more in the summer of 1996. Watch the Announcements page for further information. If you add your name to our mailing list as instructed above, you will receive an announcemnt.
We are happy to arrange site visits for mathematics educators and their students. We will arrange a tour and time to play in our Mathematics laboratory and our Mathematics Computer Classroom. Limited funds are available to pay expenses for mathematics educators. Please Email us if you want to arrange such a visit.
