Electronic Library: Software Alcove
Shareware Repository
This is a collection of freeware and shareware that we or our colleagues have found useful in mathematics education.
We expect it to grow, but in keeping with our goals, we want to maintain a manageable list of high quality offerings.
Software Offerings
- The University of Arizona software package is one of the best we have seen.
Much of the software is directed at calculus but it also applies to
precalculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. It includes the
Are You Ready series that helps students determine if they are
prepared for the next mathematics course, a number of nice demonstration
packages, and toolkits that help students solve problems. You can get
further information about the program and download all or part of it
from our Arizona Collection Page,
or link directly
to the University of Arizona where you may download the files in PAK
format. ( We suggest you read the simple text provided there
before downloading from that site.)
-
Calculus Calculator version 4
is a beta test upgrade of CC3 produced by David Meredith of San francisco
State University. It is compressed with PKUNZIP. CC3 is no longer
shareware. It is available through Prentice Hall for about $30.00.
- Calculus Tutor is a shareware tutorial package for calculus. It is not
multiple choice but accepts typed answers. If incorrect answers are
given, the program provides the correct procedure. This is a fairly
complete demonstration package with instructions for purchase of the
entire program.
- The Midshipman Plotting Program (MPP) is an excellent freeware graphing
package with lots of nice features including implicit plots and 3D
plotting via MPP3D. It was developed by Howard Penn and associates at the
United States Naval Academy.
Download the MPP program
compressed with PKZIP. Documentation and lots
are examples are included. The Midshipman Differential Equations
Program (MDEP) was written by the same group. It plots solutions of
differential equations among other things.
Download the MDEP program
compressed with PKZIP.
- Peanut Software has a very nice
Plotting package. It is easy to use and has
lots offeatures including implicit plotting and three-dimensional plotting. It plots
solutions of differential equations and even offers "slide-show" animation. Documentation
is included. If you like the format of this program, you may also be interested in other
programs produced by Peanut Software. (All are compressed by PKZIP.)
- Download
lab1.zip which contains a number of
simulations and demonstrations suitable for calculus.
- Download
lab2.zip which provides a way to
visualize mappings of the plane into itself. It also provides visualizations for
Newton's method applied to a complex function.
- Download
conicsps.zip which displays conics
defined by various methods.
- A number of Derive files are available from our
Derive.mth Collection.
- There are a number of Mathematica Notebooks available in our
Mathematica Notebooks Collection.
