Strategies for Under-Prepared Students

Strategies for Under-Prepared Students

One major factor in successfully completing mathematics classes is appropriate background. Most lower division classes depend heavily on the knowledge and skills that should have been learned in prerequisite classes. Because mathematics is not only something a student learns about but is something the student must do, mathematical knowledge and skills need to be used to maintain sufficient facility. If it has been more than six months since you have taken a mathematics class, a class which uses mathematics heavily or been employed in a job that uses mathematics, it is likely that you will need to review and practice doing mathematics before taking additional classes.

Before embarking on any of options below, you should discuss the possibilities with your academic adviser.

Students Under-Prepared for Math 2144 Calculus I

If you have gotten too low a score on the Calculus Readiness Exam, it has been several months since you had a mathematics course or you feel that you are not ready for Math 2144 there are some options available.

  • You can enroll in a prerequisite course such as Math 1715 Precalculus or Math 1613 Trigonometry. Both of these classes are being offered during the 8 week summer session. If you are not near Stillwater during the summer, similar courses are available at other universities and colleges throughout the country. If you choose this approach, you should plan to study enough to earn a grade of A or B.
  • You can review precalculus by working online using the software ALEKS. A special class has been setup.  To sign-up use course code WGAWL-V3HCD and follow the directions. You will need to purchase an access code using a credit card for $30. Before starting to use the ALEKS software, please read this.

Students Under-Prepared for Precalculus

Precalculus covers material from Math 1513 College Algebra and Math 1613 Trigonometry, but skips some things and moves through the remaining material at a fast pace. If you have had courses similar to high school algebra I and II and geometry, but feel you are unprepared for Math 1715 Precalculus, there are some options.

  • If your background in algebra is very weak, you may need to take either Beginning Algebra or Intermediate Algebra at NOC.
  • If your background is adequate, you could take the two courses Math 1513 and Math 1613.
