If you are a faculty member, lecturer, or grad student in the department you should receive email messages about scheduled downtime, system changes, etc. Unless an emergency arises there will be advance notification of system downtimes and downtime will occur after 5pm or on weekends.
There is also a System News web page, that the admins do their best to keep up to date.
