If you want to pick out your own new password you need to be physically present at the time your password is reset so that you type it in. If it's a weekday and you can't find the system administrator you can leave a note, including what you'd like your password to be reset to, in the system administrators mailbox.
If the problem occurs after hours (after 5 on a weekday or anytime on a weekend) you can send mail to sysmgr, including what you'd like your new temporary password to be. This is insecure as it's possible for someone to read your new password as it goes through the mail. It should be used only if you must have access to your account before the system administrator is available in person to reset your password. If you do this please change your password as soon as you log in.
