Department Overview

The Mathematics Department at Oklahoma State University offers an exciting environment for collegiate study with an award-winning, internationally renowned faculty. Over three quarters of our faculty members have obtained recent research grants and awards from the National Science Foundation and other sources. Small class sizes make it easy to interact with the faculty, and innovative courses such as the project-oriented Math Modeling course and a weekly Problem Solving Seminar enhance the curriculum. At OSU, we provide a challenging mathematical education of the highest caliber.

Knowing that each of you is an individual, we have structured the department to allow each student to develop to his or her fullest potential. The flexibility of our degree programs and the breadth of our course offerings enable all our majors to find their best plan of study. Outside the classroom, events such as the Putnam Mathematical Competition, the Math Modeling Competition, and field trips to meetings of the Mathematics Association of America also stimulate interest in mathematics.

We continue to upgrade our facilities for undergraduate, graduate, and faculty use. Currently, the Math Department operates a network of SUN microcomputer workstations and personal computers. In addition, all OSU students have access to the mainframe computers of Computing and Information Services (CIS).

The Department's Undergraduate Lounge is located in Math Sciences 423A, just off of the main faculty lounge (room 423). It is a quiet place to study or to work on mathematics with friends. The lounge contains a wide selection of books at the 2000 to 5000 level, plus some high-level reference books. There is also a collection of some of the best undergraduate math periodicals--MAA Magazine, The College Math Journal, Pi Mu Epsilon Journal, and more. Undergraduates are welcome to join the graduate students and faculty at tea every afternoon, Monday through Friday, in the main lounge.

You should also get to know the Mathematics Learning Resource Center (MLRC) in the basement of South Murray Hall. This area contains a laboratory of personal computers, an extensive library of instructional videotapes, a collection of 3-D manipulatives for studying arithmetic and geometry, and other resources to enhance the learning of mathematics. See Section 1.3 for more details, and Chapter 8 for possible work/study options through the MLRC.
