Preparation for Grad School in Math

For a Master's program at OSU or elsewhere, the student should have taken MATH 4023, Introduction to Analysis, and MATH 4013, Calculus of Several Variables. In addition, suggested coursework includes:

 Pure Mathematics

MATH 4143 Ādvanced Calculus I

MATH 4153 Advanced Calculus II

MATH 4613 Modern Algebra I

MATH 5013 Modern Algebra II

MATH 5303 General Topology

Applied Mathematics

MATH 4143 Advanced Calculus I

MATH 4153 Advanced Calculus II

MATH 4283 Complex Variables

MATH 4513 Numerical Analysis

MATH 5023 Advanced Linear Algebra

Preparation for doctoral work in a first-rate program should include courses in all four of the basic areas of mathematics:

 Real Analysis

MATH 4143 Ādvanced Calculus I

MATH 4153 Advanced Calculus II

Algebra

MATH 4613 Modern Algebra I

MATH 5013 Modern Algebra II

Complex Variables or Numerical Analysis

MATH 4283 Complex Variables

MATH 4513 Numerical Analysis

General Topology

MATH 5303 General Topology

We also strongly recommend joining the Departmental Honors Program and preparing a senior thesis.
