Teaching mathematics at the junior high and high school level is a very popular option for the Department's majors. Though a teaching certificate check sheet is included in Appendix C, you will need extra help in figuring out all the requirements. Be sure to see the Office of Teacher Education in Willard Hall as soon as possible, because, in addition to these courses, there are numerous prerequisites, not all courses are offered each semester, and standardized tests are required. For example:
Note. Among the specialized Methods/Curriculum courses, CIED 4003 is offered only in the fall semesters of odd-numbered years, and CIED 4053 is offered only in the fall semesters of even-numbered years.
Math courses to think about include:
MATH 4033 History of MathMATH 4403 Geometry I
MATH 4713 Number Theory
MATH 4583 Intro to Math Modeling
MATH 4023 Intro to Modern Analysis
The teacher certificate check sheet in the appendix is a guide to the courses required to obtain teacher certification in Oklahoma. As it is very useful in organizing and planning course loads, we suggest you hang on to this sheet and actively use it to arrange your semester schedules. Many of the requirements listed on the check sheet are non-negotiable; however, many of them do allow more flexibility in choice than you can readily tell from the list.
For instance:
Again, you may also want to think about getting a graduate degree, and then going into teaching at a college or junior college. (That advanced degree can really take you places!)
