Study Tips

 

1.      Practice good study habits

Avoid distractions.

Be careful and active reader of mathematics.

When you read your textbook, always have pencil and paper handy to try out problems, ideas, and concepts that you are trying to understand.

 

2.      Be neat and thoughtful when you do your mathematics work

This applies even to your own scratch work. Silly mistakes, the ones over understood material, are usually due to sloppiness in the way you do your problem work. Many mathematics problems can be solved by organizing the work neatly. Thus, be neat and pay attention at all times to the work that you are doing.

 

3.      Be patient with your learning

Demanding immediate understanding of mathematics will only make you frustrated. Learning mathematics takes time. Be fair to yourself and give yourself the time to learn mathematics.

 

4.      Be a persistent problem solver

Do not give up easily on a problem. The solution may be as close as your next idea.

 

5.      Cultivate a positive attitude

Take full responsibility for your own work, the mistakes as well as the successes. Learn to accept criticism and profit form it.

 

6.      Never take a quiz or an exam with gaps in your understanding of the material covered

Use all the learning resources available to you. These include the Technical Calculus textbook, the TCLS, MLRC, and tutoring. Your instructor and your classmates can also be an aid to your understanding the material.

 

7.      Learn from your mistakes

Make a special and determined effort to learn from each mistake you make. If you can focus upon a mistake so that you avoid making it again in the future, then you will show measurable progress in learning mathematics
