College Algebra - Math 1513 - Fall 2006 - Section 6

Homework Guidelines

A student’s success or failure in a math course is usually directly related to the amount of time and effort they put into the homework assignments. You are responsible for all assigned homework problems. You are also responsible for all the textbook material in the sections we cover even though the material may not be specifically discussed in the lecture. You should always begin your homework assignments by first carefully reading the sections in the book before you start working the problems. Pay special attention to the examples in the book. As a general rule, you should spend a minimum of 1-2 hours on each assignment. Many of the problems on the exams will be similar to homework problems and/or examples in the book.

Always remember that the main purpose of the homework is to help you learn the material. Any grade you receive for working the problems is secondary to the main purpose. The homework assignments are intended to provide exercises that help you practice, study and learn the course material. The object is not just to “get the right answer”, but rather to learn the material. After you work a problem, you should ask yourself if you understand the concepts of the problem and could you work another problem similar to it on an exam.

Don’t skimp on paper. It is suggested that you copy the problem on your paper before you work it. The written problem, along with your work, make a complete solution. Show all your work - answers alone will receive no credit. If the answer has units (dollars, feet, etc.) be sure to include them. Your work should be neat and legible. Use a pencil instead of a pen.

Only a small subset of the assigned problems will be selected and graded on each assignment. Some students complain that we didn't grade any of the problems that they worked. The only way to insure that this doesn't happen to you is to work and turn in all the problems that were assigned.

Homework assignments will be collected at the beginning of the class sessions. Therefore, on the day the assignments are due, you should come to class with your papers ready to hand in. You must be present for the entire class session for the paper to be graded. No late homework will be accepted for any reason. Under special circumstances and with the instructor's permission, homework can be turned in early. Discuss this with your instructor in advance if you need to turn in an assignment early. Papers should be submitted using the guidelines below. Failure to submit a homework assignment properly will result in a grade of zero (0).

  1. Problems in the order they were assigned - textbook page and problem number on each problem
  2. Papers stapled in the upper left-hand corner
  3. Papers folded lenthwise, page 1 toward the inside
  4. Your Name and Student Number written on the outside
