Due largely to the spread of Christianity and then subsequently Islam, knowledge of the ancient language on which Egyptian hieroglyphics were based was eliminated well before 1000 AD. Deciphering the writing found on the wondrous Egyptian monuments was a problem that occupied many people until the middle of the 1800's when thanks largely to the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, Champollion was able to work out a convincing decipherment.
