Professor William Jaco Elected Trustee of the AMS

Regents and Grayce B Kerr Professor William Jaco has been elected to a five year term as a Trustee of the American Mathematical Society. The Trustees are similar to the board of directors of a corporation and have primary responsibility for the business operations of the Society.

Promotions Approved June 18, 2010

Anthony Kable was promoted to the rank of professor and Mahdi Asgari was promoted to associate professor at the June meeting of the OSU Regents. Professors Kable and Asgari work in number theory and representation theory. Professor Kable received his Ph.D. at OSU and returned to OSU as a faculty member after completing a postdoctoral appointment at Cornell. Professor Asgari received his Ph.D. from Purdue University.

 

OSU Hosts the 75th Meeting of the Oklahoma-Arkansas Section of the MAA

April 4-6 mathematics faculty and students from the two state area will gather for the 75th Meeting of the Oklahoma-Arkansas Section of the Mathematical Association of America. There will be lectures, student competitions, and workshops. Details about the meeting are available on this website and the section's website.

Two OSU Professors Named Fellows of the AMS

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) recently introduced a program of honoring some members as Fellows of the AMS. Professors William Jaco and David Wright of the OSU Mathematics Department were selected as members of the first group of Fellows. Awards Ceremony 2010

On April 27, 2010 the mathematics department held its annual awards ceremony. Preceding the presentation of the awards and scholarships a reception was held in the department lounge. Award recipients, their family members and friends, mathematics faculty and graduate students were in attendance.

 

Topology Conference and William Jaco's 70th Birthday

June 4-6, 2010 a conference was held at OSU in honor of Regents and Grayce B. Kerr Professor William Jaco. Professor Jaco has been a major contributor to theory of three-manifolds. In addition Professor Jaco was head of the department of mathematics at OSU, 1982-1988, Executive Director of the American Mathematical Society, 1988-1995, and then returned to OSU as Kerr Professor.

Oklahoma-Arkansas Section of the MAA News

At the 72nd meeting, March 26-27, 2010, Professor David Wright was presented the annual award for outstanding college or university teaching. This award was actually for 2009 but weather conditions forced the meeting last year to be ended very early. Stillwater High School teacher and part-time lecturer for the OSU Mathematics Department, Mark Thomas, was presented the award as the outstanding high school teacher for Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State was selected as the site of the 75th annual meeting of the section which will occur in April 2013.
